1 Chapter 9: Motion Section 1
Key terms: Motion, reference point, International System of Units, meter Key concepts: When is an object in motion? How do scientists measure distance?

2 Describing motion Motion – an object is in motion if its distance to another object is changing. Reference point – a place or object used for comparison to determine if something is in motion Relative motion – whether or not something is moving depends on its reference point. You may not be moving while sitting in class, but you are moving in reference to a fixed position in outer space.
