Objective Analyse how gender and race are portrayed in a key scene in Crash

Gender and Race Critics have said that the film relies too heavily on stereotypes. How is gender portrayed in the film and is this reductive (in other words fixed on stereotypes)?

Scene Analysis Having looked at the scene where Rick and jean are car-jacked, we will now look at another key scene: The scene where Christine is rescued from her wrecked car by Officer Ryan

What to look out for How is Ryan portrayed as both hero and villain in this scene? How does the scene reinforce the prescriptive gender roles of the protector and the weak female? Does it also undermine them in any way? Focus on cinematography and dialogue here too – what do you notice?

Comparison with DTRT How does this compare with the way Jade is treated when she goes to Sal’s towards the end of the day in DTRT?

Final Question ‘The portrayal of women in films is becoming less and less realistic and instead focuses on stereotypes.’ How far do both films agree with this statement?
