2 Farming Southern farmers had a difficult time finding people to work the cotton fields Sharecropper: Family farms a section of the land in exchange for food at harvest time Housing is provided for sharecropping family Tenant Farming People paid farmers money to rent out land The tenant farmers were able to grow what they wanted on this land

4 Cities and Industry Southern leaders decided to rebuild a new industrialized south that would resemble the North Railroads were needed to be built and extended throughout the South With the increase rail lines commerce and population increased Problem with the Southern industry was that they did not make finished goods but only early manufacturing stages

6 Funding Reconstruction
Congress provided the south with money to rebuild infrastructure or public property like roads, bridges and railroads Southern states also created Public school systems South was hit with heavy taxes to pay for these improvements White southerners both wealthy and poor resented this added financial burden
