1 Bell Ringer: Wednesday, April 18th
Get the article from yesterday out (“The Dime Store Floor”) Answer: What did you think of the article? What’s the author’s purpose in writing this? What did he want the reader to realize, appreciate, or understand? (The author’s purpose is to reveal/expose/create/heighten/encourage/educate/portray/suggest/ explain/demonstrate/support/ridicule/ satirize/evoke/clarify/echo/urge/communicate…) Does the author’s experience connect in some way to your own life? Do the writer’s revelations lead you to reflect upon your own attitudes or ideals? Underline at least 2 pieces of text in the article that you would use if you were to write comprehensive answers to these questions.

2 What we’re reading for…
As ALWAYS, author’s purpose. Why did he write this? What does he want the audience to realize/appreciate/understand? As ALWAYS, rhetorical devices that make the work effective, meaningful, unique, etc. Today, we’ll focus on setting. If relevant, how does the author connect the setting (TIME and PLACE) with this life experience? Do the settings change, and how do they serve as a backdrop for events in the writer’s life?
