OCLC provides services to support the increasing digital information collections provided by libraries, museums, and archives. Over the past 5 years we’ve been adapting to this emerging field with a variety of new services and integrating them with WorldCat.
There are no specific entry or exit points in OCLC’s digital life cycle, nor is there a requirement to use all of them. Choose the services that best meet your needs.
WorldCat: OCLC greatly expands access to its member libraries’ collections—digital and physical—by integrating its services with the WorldCat database. WorldCat is the world’s largest and most comprehensive database of bibliographic and library ownership information. Contribute your digital collection’s metadata to WorldCat, or provide access to your digital surrogates through OCLC’s expanding Digital Registry, and your digital collection gets more exposure, helping you recuperate digitization costs more quickly. And your collection becomes part of a collaborative archive of information shared by your users and users around the world.
About 5 years ago, OCLC added to its mission a focus on developing services supporting collections of digital materials in libraries. To that end, this division was formed. Our focus has been in four areas: planning, processing, management, and discovery/access. We provide a variety of services across the entire life cycle of a digital collection.
Processing – one of the biggest expenditures in digital conversion is and will be on keeping up with the latest technology and utilizing it effectively and efficiently. OCLC’s conversion services provide preservation microfilming, scanning, and metadata creation for you to reduce your up-front capital expenditures in this area and reduce your ongoing operating costs in training and re-training as technology and project needs change.
Content management tools – OCLC provides content management tools supporting local management and access to digital objects to help increase the availability of unique, primary source materials available to library users.
Digital Archive – OCLC’s Digital Archive is one of the first archive’s available for use by the library community. The Archive is a general purpose digital repository with tools specialized to the archival needs of specific communities, a service architecture following the Open Archive Information System (OAIS) specification. The Archive exists as part of the growing network of digital repositories providing services to libraries that may not have the capital resources and development staff to create their own in-house service. The Archive currently provides two sets of tools: a web-harvesting capability supporting the increasing web document depository needs of government libraries, and tools for the long-term storage of preservation-master digital still images.
