1 6.3 Naming Compounds and Writing Compunds

2 Naming Compounds and Writing Compounds
Chemists use a system for naming compounds that is based on rules established by I.U.P.A.C. Describing ionic compounds The name of ionic compounds must distinguish the compound from other ionic compounds containing the same elements The formula of an ionic compound describes the ratio of the ions in the compound Binary compound: compound made from only two elements

3 Naming Compounds and Writing Compounds
Alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, and aluminum form ions with positive charges equal to the group number Transition metals form more than one type of ion Polyatomic ion: a covalently bonded group of atoms that has a positive or negative charge and acts as a unit

4 Naming Compounds and Writing Compounds
Formula of Ionic Compounds The name/formula of a molecular compound describe the type and number of atoms in a molecule of the compound Formula - 1.) Put the symbol of cation first, followed by symbol of anion 2.) Determine ratio of ions in the compound 3.) Write your final product

5 Naming Compounds and Writing Compounds
Example - Practice Problems Symbols of cation & anion in Calcium Chloride Ca with charge of 2+ and Cl with a charge of 1- Ratio of ions in the compound Two chloride ions for each calsium ion Final Formula CaCl2
