9-5 Mitochondrial DNA

Mitochondrial DNA Mitochondrial DNA is located outside the cell’s nucleus and is inherited from the mother.

Mitochondrial DNA

Forensic Typing Two regions of mitochondrial DNA, HV1 and HV2, are sequenced for a forensic typing purposes. Tandem repeats. MLVA is a method used to perform molecular typing of microorganisms. It utilizes the naturally occurring variation in the number of tandem repeated DNA sequences found in the microbial genome of most bacterial species. Such tandem repeats may be perfect, but often imperfect repeats containing mutations are encountered.

Uses Mitochondrial DNA typing does not approach STR analysis is discrimination power and thus is best reserved for samples, such as hair, for which STR analysis might not be possible.

CODIS Combined DNA Index System, CODIS is a computer software program developed by the FBI that maintains a DNA database. local state national

CODIS Profiles CODIS is a DNA profile database from
convicted offenders crime-scene evidence profiles of missing people

CODIS Forensic Database
Forensic index has DNA samples contains about 110,000 samples of unsolved crime scene cases.

Offender Index Offender Index had DNA from almost 7,000,000 arrested or convicted criminals.
