Outgroup – “them” those perceived as different or apart from our group.

4 The other-race effect The tendency to recall faces of one’s own race more accurately than faces of other races

5 What are Stereotypes? A generalized (sometimes accurate but often overgeneralized or exaggerated) belief about a group of people.

6 Prejudice It usually involves stereotyped beliefs, negative feelings, and a predisposition to discriminatory action. An unjustified and usually negative attitude toward a group and its members.

7 Prejudice is a negative attitude, discrimination is a negative behavior.

8 Three Parts of Prejudice
Beliefs (stereotypes) Emotions (for example, hostility, envy, or fear) Predispositions to actions (to discriminate)
