With your partner, work your way through these three examples. Go into as much depth as you see represented in the example Be ready to share with the class at 8:15

5 STEAL- a way to analyze characters
The author uses indirect characterization to make us use our own judgment to decide what a character is like, based on evidence in the story. STEAL represents five types of evidence to look for. When you find evidence, don’t forget to explain what that evidence shows about the character.

6 Effect others have on the character
STEAL Evidence Speech What do you notice about the way the character speaks? What does he/she say? Thoughts What is revealed about the character through their own thoughts? Effect others have on the character What is revealed through the character’s effect on other people? How do other characters feel or behave in reaction to the character? Actions What does the character do? How does the character behave? Looks What does the character look like? How does the character dress?
