1 Estimation Rounding Whole Numbers
and Estimation Estimate solutions to problems with whole numbers, fractions and decimals and use the estimates to assess the reasonableness of results in the context o the problem.

2 I can… estimate solutions to problems using whole numbers
Self Assessment 5- I can do it without help & teach others. 4- I can do this with no help, but I don’t know if I can explain it. 3- I can do this with a little help. 2- I can do this with a lot of help! 1- I don’t have a clue.

3 What we will learn today:
Understand concept of rounding whole numbers and estimation. Find the sum, difference, product, and quotient when estimating to whole numbers. Apply problem-solving strategies to real-world problems.

4 5 or more – raise the score
Remember… When you round, you look to the digit to the right. 4 or less – let it rest 5 or more – raise the score

5 The population of the Sioux Reservation was 68,242.
69,000 68,000 The population of the Sioux Reservation was 68,242. To the nearest thousand, what was the population?

6 68,000 The population of the Sioux Reservation was 68,242.
69,000 68,000 The population of the Sioux Reservation was 68,242. To the nearest thousand, what was the population? 68,000 Explain why you think this. 68,242 is between 68,000 and 69,000, but it is closer to 68,000.

7 What digit(s) can help you round to the nearest thousand?
1) 28, ) 28, ) 28,512 Round to the nearest thousand. 28,000 29,000 29,000

8 Round 73,852 to the nearest 1. Ten-thousand. 2. Thousand. 3. Hundred. 4. Ten. 70,000 74,000 73,900 73,850

9 Things to Remember when Estimating
When you round to estimate a SUM or DIFFERENCE you should round the numbers to the same place value When you round to estimate a PRODUCT you should round the numbers to the leading digit 28 + 114 Round each number to nearest ten 30 + 110 140 191 x 11 Round each number to the leading digit 200 x 10 2000

10 The Smith family wants to buy a truck that costs
$18,530 and camping trailer that costs $8,427. Estimate the total cost of the truck and the camping trailer. 18, ,427 Round up Round down $19,000 + $8,000 = $27,000

11 Estimate the number of bricks used to build this portion of a chimney.

12 15 Bricks tall About 4 bricks long About 2 bricks wide
15 x 4 x 2 = 120 bricks approximately

13 bricks used to build this portion of a chimney.
Estimate the number of bricks used to build this portion of a chimney. The end.

14 Things to Remember when Estimating
When you round to estimate a QUOTIENT you should round by using compatible numbers Round each number to a compatible number 247 ÷ 47 = 250 ÷ 50 = 5

15 You are in a group of 59 volunteers who are planting 469 trees throughout a city. About how many trees will each volunteer plant if you all plant about the same number? 480 ÷ 60 = 8 trees each

16 I can… estimate solutions to problems using whole numbers
Self Assessment 5- I can do it without help & teach others. 4- I can do this with no help, but I don’t know if I can explain it. 3- I can do this with a little help. 2- I can do this with a lot of help! 1- I don’t have a clue.

17 Daily Check 1.2 Estimate…. in your math notebook 92 – 48 395 + 220
1295 – 310 24 x 4 412 ÷ 37 348 x 22 685 ÷ 7 You have 12 shares of stock at $79 a share. Estimate how much you will spend. Estimate how long it will take to travel 300 miles if you travel an average rate of 52 miles per hour.
