2 Example Alexander Fleming, a young Scottish scientist, was researching the theory that nasal mucus had antibacterial properties. He left a culture plate of Staphylococcus bacteria on his lab bench while he went on a two-week vacation. When he returned, he noticed the growth of a mold, Penicillium notatum, that had accidentally contaminated the plate while he was gone. When the Staphylococcus bacteria grew, it covered the entire plate except for the area surrounding the mold. Fleming correctly concluded that the mold must have released a substance that prevented the growth of the bacteria. He named this substance penicillin. Penicillin is now known as one of the most important life-saving drugs in the world for the treatment of bacterial infections.
