1 Inferences and Conclusions

2 What can you infer? What’s going on in this picture?

3 An inference is… When you figure something out using clues and what you already know. Coming up with your own ideas, answers, and thoughts. “Reading between the lines”

4 Activity Break into 5 groups Look at your picture
Talk with your group about what you think is going on in your picture. What can you infer/conclude about the people in each of the pictures? What makes you think this? We will share what you’ve inferred from the pictures.

10 Inferencing through text…
"Achoo!" Patti sneezed. She sneezed again and then a third time.  She felt very warm and her head hurt.  She dragged herself out of bed and called her boss. She told him that she wouldn't be going to work. Why wasn’t Patti going to work? What clues in the story helped you make this inference?

11 Text Clues + Background knowledge=
Inferencing

12 What we know about inferences:
We need to find clues to get some answers. We need to add those clues to what we already know or have read. There can be more than one correct answer. We need to be able to support inferences.

13 Practice… Mary curled up next to her dog and started to cry because her mother grounded her for coming home late from soccer practice. How many different things can we INFER from just this one sentences?

14 Use details in the passage to make an inference or conclusion
Buck’s eyes locked on the skinny kid with glasses. Buck knew his name was Steve. He was a couple years younger and was walking alone. Buck walked up to Steve and shoved him hard. Steve stumbled but didn’t fall. Buck laughed. Steve turned around slowly. He looked at Buck straight in the eye. Buck took a step back. “That was very rude,” Steve said in a steady voice. He seemed to grow a few inches taller. “You should treat other people the way you want to be treated.” Buck began to feel uneasy. This was a strange, little kid. “Oops. Sorry”, he said. Then, he left to find an easier target. What can you tell about Steve? What does the author mean by “he seemed to grow a few inches taller” How can you tell that Buck is a bully?

15 Can anyone think of a time they had to make an inference?

16 Review What is an inference?
