2 Myths Myth A fictional tale that describes the action of gods or heroes. Every culture has its collection of myths. A myth can do the following: Tell how the universe or culture began Explain something in nature (ex. the return of spring after winter) Teach a lesson Express a value

3 Archetypes Archetype: a universal prototype on which others are based. What does this mean? Can you give some examples?

4 Archetypal Characters
Hero: strong, smart, confident & brave protagonist. An all-around all-star. Examples? Superman, Luke Skywalker, Hercules Antihero: NOT the antagonist, opposite of hero (traits) Young, unconfident, unprepared, sometimes brash character Needs a mentor to complete his quest Peter Parker, Frodo Baggins, Percy Jackson

5 Archetypal Characters
Trickster: a shifty & often rebellious crafty character; a troublemaker. Examples? Robin Hood, The Joker, Hans Solo Wise Old Man: a mentor & guardian of the hero. Often supernaturally attuned. Yoda, Obi-wan, Daedalus

6 Archetypal Characters
Traitorous Daughter: a woman who secretly helps the hero, against her powerful father’s wishes Examples? Princess Leia, Princess Jasmine
