1 Mitosis Cell Reproduction

2 Mitosis Notes Asexual Reproduction – offspring are produced that are genetically identical to the parent Mitosis – the asexual reproduction process of cell division

3 Mitosis Notes During cell division …
It is essential that the DNA is replicated The number of chromosomes NEVER changes Each daughter cell gets its own copy of the DNA

4 The Phases of Mitosis Interphase Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase
Cytokinesis Mnemonic Device I mmediatly P lease M eet A t T he C ircus

5 MITOSIS: Starts with one cell Chromosomes are copied
Daughter cells are IDENTICAL to the original cell

6 Interphase What happens? DNA replicates Cell looks normal

7 INTERPHASE

8 Prophase What happens? Nuclear membrane disappears Chromosomes appear
Centrioles begin to move

9 PROPHASE

10 Metaphase What happens?
Spindle fibers line the chromosomes up in the middle of the cell

11 METAPHASE Chromosomes lined in center of cell Spindle fibers attach

12 Anaphase What happens? The spindle fibers pull the chromosomes apart at the middle

13 ANAPHASE Chromosomes pulled to opposite ends of the cell by spindle fibers

14 Telophase What happens? Nuclear membrane reappears
Chromosomes disappear The cell begins to be pinched in the middle

15 New cell wall is starting to form
TELOPHASE New cell wall is starting to form early-TELOPHASE late-TELOPHASE

16 Cytokinesis What happens? The cell is pinched in half
Two identical cells are made

17 CYTOKINESIS Two new daughter cells that are IDENTICAL to the original cell!
