1 Session 13 Thermal Energy Lab
Warm Up: When you jump out of a swimming pool, why do you feel colder right after you come out?

2 Warm Up Answer The water molecules on the surface of your body escape with whatever body heat you had while in the pool. Water is an excellent conductor of heat (as opposed to an insulator) so it steals heat from your body. Like evaporation from sweating.

3 Thermal Energy Lab Write the following terms in your notebook:
Thermal Energy: The energy an object has due to the motion of its particles; the total amount of kinetic energy of particles in an object. Chemical Energy: Energy that is stored in the chemical composition of matter. Then: Put your Name and Block # on your Lab Sheet. *You will be graded on this lab when it is completed, so Don’t lose it! Observe and record whether or not Baking Soda and Road Salt are soluble in Water. Break into Lab Groups and Proceed with Lab. When done, come back to your seat to complete Scientific Explanation.

4 Reviewing the CER Framework
Claim: a conclusion about a problem Typically the claim answers a question Evidence: scientific data that supports the claim Appropriate and sufficient evidence Reasoning: a justification that shows why the data counts as evidence to support the claim and includes appropriate scientific principles Adapted from Toulmin’s model of argumentation Joe - I was trying to make these parallel. Is an explanation a discussion? A statement? Not sure that this is better. It seemed like what you had before was being repeated later in the case study. I guess my question is what is our goal for these slides around evidence, explanation and modeling? Adapted from NGSS Professional Development

5 Is Thermal Energy Transferred in this Experiment?
Partner up with a neighbor TALK through a scientific explanation of our phenomenon using the CER framework What can you CLAIM from your observations that explains the thermal transfer of energy? What EVIDENCE supports your claim? What is your REASONING for why your evidence supports your claim? WRITE these scientific explanations on your Lab Sheet. Adapted from NGSS Professional Development

6 Scientific Explanation
Share your scientific explanations with someone else See if you can identify the CLAIM, EVIDENCE, and REASONING in their explanation Was their explanation convincing? How could it be improved? Adapted from NGSS Professional Development
