Restate Prompt: Why did the Red Crayon quit?
The Red Crayon quit because . . . Use specific nouns, proper nouns Restating the question happens to be the easiest step, but it is almost probably the most important step in the process because it gets the writer off on the right foot. This is a real life skill. People use restating to give themselves another minute to think about the answer and to confirm that they have indeed understood the request. Good communicators do this in real life. Ardith Davis Cole has some great action research based information in her book , Better Answers.

Answer it completely Prompt: Why was the beige crayon upset? Restate: The beige crayon was upset because… Answer: The beige crayon was upset because he was tired of playing second place to Mr. Brown Crayon. Mr. Beige wanted to color bears, ponies and puppies instead of wheat.

The first thing that made Mr. Gray Crayon mad was being used to color in all of the big animals, like elephants, rhinos and hippos. The next thing Mr. Gray complained about was not being able to color small gray things like pebbles. Finally, Mr. Gray asked for a break because he was tired. Notice the transition words.
