1 Measuring Distances in Space

2 Astronomical Unit In the solar system, the standard unit of measure is the astronomical unit (AU), which is the average distance between the Sun and the Earth (approximately 1.5x108 km or 150,000,000 km)

3 Measuring Distances with AU

4 Light Year Distances between stars (interstellar) are measured using the light year (ly), which is equivalent to the distance travelled by a photon of light in a vacuum (space) in the course of one Earth year ( days). A light year is approximately 12 trillion km or 12,000,000,000,000 km.
