1 Warm-up How could we describe motion/movement of an object?
Discuss with your table. Be creative. Write your idea on your NEW UNIT 1 warm-up sheet.

2 Motion

3 Ways to Represent Motion
There are four main ways we will represent motion this unit: Written Descriptions Motion Maps Graphs Equations

4 Written Descriptions This is a detailed sentence describing the motion the object is experiencing. Must include: Starting position Direction moved Relative Speed

5 Starting Position When looking at a graph of position vs. time, the starting position is the position at t=0. Position can be described as: greater than 0 less than 0 equal to 0

6 Direction Moved Direction can be described as: Stationary/stopped
moving in a + direction (away from p=0) moving in a - direction (towards p=0)

7 Relative Speed Relative Speed can be described as:
Constant (straight line) Faster (larger slope) Slower (smaller slope)

8 Motion Maps We use motion maps to:
demonstrate the motion of an object visually.

9 Motion Maps To make these useful communication tools, we need to agree on a key we will all use: We will use dots to represent seconds where the first dot is placed at t=0. There should be a dot recorded for each second! We will use arrows to represent direction and speed. Longer arrows mean greater speed Shorter arrows mean slower speed When an object is stopped, we will represent this with stacked dots.

10 Warm-up Write a written description for the following position vs. time graph.
