1 April 26 Reminders: Yesterday - Unit Test Sound & Light, portfolios graded. Test make-up is today after school. We begin new unit today - Electricity & Magnetism

2 Warm-Up 4-26-13 Turn to page 499 in your text.
Read both the introduction to Unit V: Electricity & Magnetism (pg. 499) and the introduction to Chapter 32 - Electrostatics (pg. 500) We've discussed Gravity as a weak force. The Electrical Force is a billion times stronger.

3 On a separate sheet of paper, write the following:
Electrostatics is electricity at rest. Electrostatics involves electric charges, the forces between them, and their behavior in materials. Electrical forces and charges: the fundamental rule at the base of all electrical phenomena is that like charges repel and opposite charges attract.

4 Electrical Forces & Charges
Electrical forces arise from particles in atoms. Simple model of atom: Protons in nucleus attract electrons and hold them in orbit. Electrons (negatively charged) are attracted to protons (positively charged), but electrons repel other electrons. The fundamental electrical property to which the mutual attraction or repulsions between electrons or protons is attributed is called charge.

5 Why is this a "fundamental" rule?
Because nobody knows why "opposites attract" and "like repels like"... Hence, we say "fundamental".

6 Read Section 32.1 in your text on pg. 500-502
Answer Chapter 32 Review Questions #1-7 on the same sheet of paper. Be sure to write out both question and answer. Submit to basket when complete.

7 We will now watch a video entitled
Video assignment We will now watch a video entitled "Electrostatics" You must follow along and fill out the video response form as you watch. Phone usage is instant loss of credit. Submit the form when complete.
