8 SCENARIO Lien is in Grade 6. She is originally from China. There are a few other students from different countries but Lien is the only Chinese student in the class. Today the class is talking about culture, and food comes up. The conversation moves to food from different countries. The students are talking about interesting foods, some of which are strange to Lien. Amir tells the group he has traveled to China and that Chinese food is the strangest because all Chinese people eat dogs. The class laughs at this comment, including the instructor. Lien thinks that everyone is laughing at her, but is afraid to say something to the group. When class finishes she goes to see the Vice-Principal. She tells the VP that the class was making fun of Chinese people and she was hurt by their comments. The next day, the instructor makes an announcement to the class that students must be careful about stereotyping people and apologizes on behalf of the class to anyone who was offended. Lien is embarrassed and thinks everyone knows this is because of her.
