1 Classifying Matter Learning Goal: to be able to describe the differences between pure substances and mixtures

2 Matter: anything that has mass and takes up space Everything except energy

3 Pure Substance- has a fixed, uniform composition and the properties do not vary
Cannot be separated into other matter by separation processes (will talk later) Has uniform properties such as density, melting point, boiling point.

4 A. Element Fixed composition, smallest part IS an atom.
i. An element cannot be broken down into a simpler substance. ii. Identify the elements below.

5

6 b. Compounds – two or more different elements in fixed proportion
i. The properties of a compound differ from the properties from which it was made. ii. Compounds can be broken down into simpler substances. Identify the compounds below.

7 2. Mixture- combination of two or more substances in which the identities are retained and are mixed in the form of solutions, suspensions, and colloids.

8 a. Homogeneous Mixture Homogeneous comes from the Greek words homo and genus, meaning “same” and “kind.” i. substances are evenly distributed. Identify the homogeneous mixtures below.

9 b. Heterogeneous Mixture
Heterogeneous comes from the Greek words hetero and genus, meaning “different” and “kind.” Identify the heterogeneous mixtures below.
