What new standards did Eleanor Roosevelt set for the role of first lady? She became more involved in public affairs. Identify the three goals of the 1st New Deal. Relief, Recovery, and Reform. What was President Roosevelt’s goal in establishing the “bank holiday”? It was established to give banks time to get their accounts in order before reopening.

3 Explain why many conservatives opposed the New Deal.
What was the purpose of the fireside chats? How did the public view Roosevelt after hearing these? The purpose was to informally communicate with American people. This made Americans trust him more as their president. Explain why many conservatives opposed the New Deal. Conservatives thought the New Deal was destroying free enterprise and undermining individual freedom.

4 Identify what each of the following programs accomplished:
FDIC Insured bank deposits up to $5,000. NRA Developed codes of fair competition to govern whole industries. CCC Provided jobs for more than 2 million young men. AAA End overproduction and raise crop prices. TVA Built dams to control floods and generate electric power. PWA Built bridges, dams, power plants, and government buildings.

5 Identify Huey Long and explain his solution to the depression.
Long came up with the “share our wealth” program which proposed high taxes on wealthy corporations and give it to the poor. Identify the goals of the 2nd New Deal. It created new public-works projects, helped farmers, and enacted measures to protect workers’ rights.

6 Whom did the 2nd New Deal help?
It addressed the problems of the elderly, poor, and unemployed. Explain John Maynard Keynes’ pump priming theory. He thought putting people to work on public projects put money into the hands of consumers who would buy more goods, stimulating the economy.

7 Identify what each of the following programs accomplished:
WPA Built or improved a good part of the Nations highways, dredged rivers and harbors, promoted soil/water conservation. SSA Established unemployment insurance for workers who lost their jobs. REA Loaned money to electric utilities to build power lines, bringing electricity to isolated rural areas. Fair Labor Standards Act Provided workers with additional rights. Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act Prohibited the mislabeling of food, drugs and cosmetics. Also insured safety and purity of goods.

Woody was hired to write songs for a movie promoting benefits of electricity. What did the Wager Act allow employees to do? Join labor unions and gave employees the right to collective bargaining.

9 What did the Wagner Act allow employees to do?
Joined labor unions and gave employees the right to collective bargaining. Explain why President Roosevelt recommended adding 6 more Justices to the Supreme Court. Roosevelt noted that the Constitution did not specify a limit on the number of justices, and he pointed out that the original justices were old and overworked.

10 Explain why the court-packing scheme hurt the Presidents’ popularity.
People accused him of trying to increase the presidential power and upsetting the delicate balance between the three branches of the Federal government.

11 Explain how African Americans suffered more than whites.
When the depression began African Americans were the first to lose their jobs. Identify the different groups that were under the New Deal Coalition. Southern whites, northern blue-collar workers, poor mid-western farmers and African Americans.

12 How did the New Deal Coaltion affect both the Senate and the House?
It increased democratic power. Was the New Deal successful in ending the Great Depression? It did not end the depression although it helped restore the American economy.

13 Explain how the government played a greater role in the economy.
The government broke away from traditional laissez faire and became involved with economy Explain how the New Deal created a welfare state. They began withdrawing taxes from workers paychecks to distribute them to the elderly.

14 How did the New Deal impact the role of the president?
It increased power Why was the 22nd Amendment added to the Constitution in 1951? Because FDR ran and won 4 times then died. People decided two should be a limit.
