1 5 minutes POD #2: Why is Neptune much bluer than Uranus?
2/19/19 Homework: STUDY GUIDE DUE TOMORROW Pop Quiz ON INNER PLANETS IS TODAY!! TEST ON PLANETS IS THURSDAY START TIMER TIME’S UP! TIME LIMIT: 5 minutes POD #2: Why is Neptune much bluer than Uranus?

2 2/4/2018 Outer Planets Notes Key Points: 1. What is a Gas Giant? 2. Jupiter 3. Lo (Jupiter’s Moon} 4. Saturn 5. Uranus 6. Neptune

3 1. What is a Gas Giant? A. A large planet with a low density composed of gases (mostly hydrogen and helium) B. No solid surface C. All have rings

4 Distances of the Outer Planets from the Sun in Astronomical Units (150 million km = 1 AU)
Jupiter 5.203 AU Saturn 9.539 AU Uranus 19.18 AU Neptune 30.06 AU Pluto 39 AU

5 2. Jupiter A. The largest planet in the solar system B. The climate is cold; and the atmosphere is made up of mostly helium and hydrogen C. Great Red Spot is a 400 year old storm system similar to a hurricane.

6 2. Jupiter D. Has faint, small rings E. Jupiter’s Surface
Majority of the planet is liquid metallic hydrogen Has a core of rocky material 10 times the size of Earth

7 Jupiter’s Rings Unlike Saturn's, Jupiter's rings are dark. They're probably composed of very small grains of rocky material. Unlike Saturn's rings, they seem to contain no ice.

8 Jupiter: Rotation = 9 hrs, 54 min; Revolution = 11 yrs, 313 days
Jupiter (Greek Zeus) was the King of the Gods. Jupiter is the fourth brightest object in the sky (after the Sun, the Moon and Venus). In 1610, when Galileo first pointed a telescope at the sky, he discovered Jupiter's four large moons Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto

9 3. Lo (Jupiter’s Moon) A. 3rd largest of Jupiter’s moons
B. Most volcanically active body in our solar system. C. 1st moon discovered orbiting another planet than Earth.

10 4. Saturn A. 2nd largest planet in the solar system B. Climate is cold; Composed mainly of hydrogen and helium with a small rocky core C. Less dense than water so it could float

11 4. Saturn D. Has the largest rings of the gas giants.
-Rings made of icy particles E. Has 31 moons

12 Saturn Revolution: 29 years, 155 days Rotation: 10 hrs, 42 min
In Roman mythology, Saturn is the god of agriculture. Saturn is the root of the English word "Saturday“.

13 Saturn’s Rings Saturn’s rings are 250,000 km or more in diameter & they're less than one kilometer thick .

14 5. Uranus A. 3rd largest planet
B. Super cold climate; atmosphere composed of hydrogen and methane Two gases that absorb red light, giving Uranus its distinct blue/green color

15 5. Uranus C. Rotates on its side
Planet was probably knocked on its side after a collision with an asteroid D. Has 21 moons and 11 rings

16 Uranus: Revolution: 83 yrs, 273 days; Rotation: 17 hrs, 12 min
Uranus is the ancient Greek deity of the Heavens, the earliest supreme god. Uranus, the first planet discovered in modern times, was discovered by William Herschel while systematically searching the sky with his telescope on March 13, 1781.

17 Uranus’ rings

18 6. Neptune A. Coldest climate
B. Gets its blue color from being made of methane gas C. Has a storm called the great Dark Spot similar to Jupiter’s great Red Spot

19 6. Neptune D. Has dark rings E. Has 11 moons Neptune and Pluto’s orbits overlap causing Neptune to sometimes orbit beyond Pluto

20 Neptune: The Great Dark Spot
In Roman mythology Neptune (Greek: Poseidon) was the god of the Sea.

21 Neptune’s Dark Rings

22 Practice Set Questions
List the Outer Planets and the number of moons that each planet has. Name one thing unique about each of the outer planets. Describe the rings of each outer planet. Describe the atmosphere of each planet. Describe one of the moons that orbits Jupiter.
