1
The Sun!! Photosynthesis
Where does the energy come from that sustains all life? The Sun!!
3
Photosynthesis Using sunlight to make glucose (sugar)
Happens in the chloroplast Chlorophyll CHLOROPLAST
4
Water, carbon dioxide and sunlight enter
1. Chlorophyll (green pigment) captures the sunlight 2. CO2 enters through the stomata (openings in the leaf) 3. water enters through the roots
5
Glucose and oxygen are produced. 1. Glucose is the plant’s food. 2
Glucose and oxygen are produced 1. Glucose is the plant’s food 2. O2 is released through the stomata since it is not needed. Plants use the food (glucose) to grow and store energy (starch)
6
Equation for photosynthesis: 6CO2 + 6H2O + sunlight C6H12O6 + 6O2 .
7
Tracking Atoms in Photosynthesis…
Reactants Reactants 6 CO2 6 H2O Products C6H12O O2
8
Draw a picture of photosynthesis
Include the following terms: plant water leaf glucose stomata sunlight chloroplast oxygen chlorophyll carbon dioxide
