1 Where energy comes from….
Photosynthesis Where energy comes from….

2 Photosynthesis Photosynthesis: The process that captures the sun’s energy to make food. Photo= “light” Synthesis=“putting together” Turns light energy into chemical energy

3 Chlorophyll Chlorophyll is a chemical in chloroplasts
that can absorb or trap light energy This is green pigment is found mostly in plant leaves

4 Atoms An atom is the basic unit of ALL living & non-living things
Atoms are made of: Protons (+) Neutrons (no charge) Electrons (--)

5 Elements An element is a form of matter that is made of only 1 type of atom Elements are found on the periodic table & each has a different number of protons Examples: Carbon, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Hydrogen

6

7 Common Elements found in the Air, Ocean, Living Things, & the Earth’s Crust
Element Name Chemical Symbol Calcium Ca Nitrogen N Hydrogen H Oxygen O Carbon C Silicon Si Aluminum Al Iron Fe Sodium Na Potassium K Magnesium Mg

8 Chemical Symbols Elements are represented using chemical symbols
Examples: -Oxygen (O) -Hydrogen (H) -Carbon (C) -Calcium (Ca)

9 Compounds When two or more atoms of different elements combine this forms a compound. The letters represent the element name The number represents how many Examples: Water (H2O)

10 Photosynthesis Compounds
Raw Materials: (What is needed) Products : (What is made) Sunlight /energy Sugar/Glucose (C6H12O6) Water (H2O) Oxygen (O2) Carbon Dioxide (CO2)

11 Chemical Equation for Photosynthesis
6H2O + 6CO2 + Light Energy  C6H12O6 + 6O2 Raw Material+ Raw Material = Products Chemical equations show how things change in a chemical reaction.

12 How do these thing get to the plant?
Water is taken in by the roots Carbon dioxide enters through stomata in the leaves

13 Photosynthesis at Work
The sugar produced during photosynthesis stores energy for producers Oxygen is released as a waste product

14 Photosynthesis and food webs
Energy is the basic need of all living things Photosynthesis is the base of the food web

15 Cellular Respiration The release of energy

16 How does food turn into energy?
Food goes into your digestive system Once digested it enters your bloodstream Next it enters the cell through diffusion! Respiration occurs inside the cell using oxygen in both plants & animals!

17 Respiration Respiration: The process cells use to break down stored food energy (glucose). When glucose is broken down = energy is released

18 Respiration Compounds
Raw Materials: (What’s needed) Products: (What’s made) Oxygen (O2) Energy (ATP) Glucose (C6H12O6) Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Water (H2O)

19 Chemical Equation for Respiration
C6H12O6+ 6O2 6CO2+ 6H2O+ Energy Raw Materials + Raw Materials = Products Does this look familiar?

20 Photosynthesis Video Respiration Video

21 Where do photosynthesis & respiration occur in the cell?
Chloroplast Cellular Respiration Mitochondria
