Typical polis built on a hill.
Had poor soil which encouraged trade.
Located near the coast

3. Daily Life
Most people lived in simple clay brick houses. They believed that buildings should be for the good of the people, not one person.
Girls married at 13 or 14 to men twice their age. Women had few rights.
When boys turned seven they came under the control of a pedagogue, a slave who taught them manners and went everywhere with them.

4. Education Plato Aristotle
Most Greek boys went to elementary school where they learned poetry (Iliad, Odyssey) reading, writing, music and gymnastics.
They stressed a healthy body and a sound mind.

5. Education Schools were later opened for older boys by the Sophists.
Soph – Wise
At the age of 18 boys went for a year or two of military training. If they had money they became Hoplites with armor, poor people were on the flanks and had no armor.

6. Citizenship Athens had three social groups.
Citizens – All people born of other Citizens, rich or poor.
Metics – Free people who paid taxes, but were born outside of Athens
Slaves – Usually taken from battle, had to obey their masters.

This is the type of democracy that Athens had
Representative Democracy – The people choose a representative to represent them in government.
This is the type of democracy the United States has.

9. Parthenon It is/was a temple to the Greek goddess Athena.
Built on top of Athens’ acropolis.
