2 What is it? Meaning “Charlie Weekly,” Charlie Hebdo is a French liberal satirical magazine that has defined itself as anti-religious, anti-racist, and extremely leftist. On 7 January 2015, two Islamist gunmen forced their way into and opened fire in the Paris headquarters, killing twelve Reports say the gunmen shouted “God is great” and “the Prophet is avenged” during the shooting

3 Image of a November 3, 2011 cover of Charlie Hebdo, renamed Charia Hebdo(“Sharia Hebdo"). Sharia is the moral code and religious law of prophetic religion. It is believed that cartoons like this caused the response of the Islamist gunmen. The word balloon reads "100 lashes if you don't die of laughter!"

5 What was the response? “Je suis Charlie” (I am Charlie) went viral, representing support of free speech and freedom of expression After the attacks, there was a unity march in Paris in support of free speech. BBC reports the crowd to be over 1 million to be over 1 million. Many world leaders attended. Obama did not.

6 This has sparked controversy over the extent of our support of free speech and our response to terrorist acts.
