1 Bellringer: Oct 16 On your list of 16 factors for Freakonomics, label each factor with one of the following symbols: AB – does this factor deal with a kid’s ability OPP – does this factor deal with a kid’s opportunities AA – does this factor seem to be a possible arbitrary advantage For example: “Highly educated parents” might be labeled AB or AA depending on how you justify your response. “Intact Family” might be labeled AA or OPP, again depending on how you justify your response. YOU pick ONE LABEL for each of the 16. It’s YOUR opinion.

2 Previously: Freakonomics chapter 5: “What Makes a Perfect Parent?”
You began by reading and predicting why certain factors mattered and didn’t matter to a child’s performance in school.

3 Remember – this information is for EARLY Childhood performance
Remember – this information is for EARLY Childhood performance. Re-read their point about academic performance later on in life. Harbinger (page 168): a person or thing that announces or signals the approach of another.

4 Activity Packet:Compare!
Find the eight factors that do matter for a child’s performance in the reading and draw a box around them. ON PAGE 177 Decide in your partnership – What do these factors have in common? Find what the authors say they have in common. Explain what they mean.

5 Compare! Find the eight factors that do not matter for a child’s performance in the reading and draw a box around them. (page 177) Decide in your partnership – What do these factors have in common? Find what the authors say they have in common. Explain what they mean.

6 Contrast! CLAIM! What is the major difference between the
factors that do matter and that don’t matter? Why would the authors use a comparison/ contrast structure to show this difference? CLAIM! What seems to be the implied claim or central idea? (you have to infer this!)

7 Now ANSWER this question in a well formed paragraph.
How is the claim developed in "What Makes a Perfect Parent?” Make sure you identify the claim. Make sure you identify how the claim is developed. Make sure you prove that the claim is the claim and that the text structure is the actual text structure. Make sure you give and explain specific examples from throughout the chapter. FOUR should be adequate. Anything less and you haven’t proven your point.

8 Homework: If you didn’t finish the writing prompt in class (see the previous slide), complete it and turn it in on Tuesday. This writing prompt is an assessment grade.
