1 Motion Vocabulary and Concept Review
8th Grade Science Ms. McKinley

2 Position The location of an object 3 things you need
REFERENCE POINT DISTANCE FROM THE REFERENCE POINT DIRECTION FROM REFERENCE POINT Example: James is standing 10 METERS WEST of the FLAGPOLE.

3 Reference point A starting point used to describe the position of an object.

4 Vector Anything that has both MAGNITUDE (size) and DIRECTION.
Example: Position is a vector b/c it has distance (size) and direction. Other examples: Velocity, Force

5 Speed The rate of change of distance over time
How fast/slow something moves Example: Usain Bolt can run at a speed of 10.4 m/sec

6 Instantaneous Speed The speed at any given moment.
The speedometer in a car measures instantaneous speed. Page 57

7 Constant Speed An object moving at constant speed travels the same distance each second. Speed is not increasing or decreasing.

8 Average Speed Average speed = TOTAL DISTANCE ÷ TOTAL TIME
Average speed is NOT the speed at one given moment. It’s a summary of the speed an object travelled

9 Speed Equation Triangle!

10 Let’s practice… Calculate the speed of Michael Phelps, who swam 100 m butterfly stroke in seconds.

11 2. If a swimmer swims at a speed of 1
2. If a swimmer swims at a speed of 1.4 m/s, how far will he swim in 140 seconds?

12 A train travels from Los Angeles, CA to Phoenix, AZ
A train travels from Los Angeles, CA to Phoenix, AZ. If the train travels at a speed of 68 km/h, how long will it take to travel 420 km?
