Understand signs of numbers in ordered pairs as indicating locations in quadrants of the coordinate plane

2 Number Systems “Natural Numbers” (a.k.a. “Counting Numbers”) are numbers used to count things that occur in nature. Example: 1, 2, 3, 4, … “Whole Numbers” are natural numbers and 0. Example: 0, 1, 2, 3, ... “Integers” are whole numbers and their opposites.

3 Integers, Positives, and Negatives
“Integers” are whole numbers and their opposites. “Opposites” are numbers that are the same absolute value (distance from 0). This includes “positive numbers” (numbers greater than 0) and “negative numbers” (numbers less than 0). Example: …, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, … Fractions and decimals are not integers, but can be positive or negative and have opposites, too. The opposite of ½ is ̶ ½ The opposite of ̶ 3.7 is 3.7

4 Number Lines Number lines can show positive and negative numbers very clearly. Number lines can be: horizontal OR vertical (sideways) (up/down) 4 3 2 1 -1 -2 -3 -4

5 Integers in Real Life Situations
Positive and Negative numbers describe lots of situations that we find in everyday life. Positive usually means increase or up or above. Negative usually means decrease or down or below. Walk down 3 flights of stairs Find 2 dollars on the sidewalk

6 Graphing coordinates is just like making scatter plots.

8 Coordinate Plane The “coordinate plane” (a.k.a. “Cartesian Plane”) is formed when two number lines intersect at a right angle on a flat surface. “x-axis” – horizontal number line “y-axis” – vertical number line “origin” – where the number lines intersect. The coordinates of the origin are (0,0). origin

9 Quadrants are the four sections the coordinate plane is divided into.
Use Roman numerals to label quadrants (I, II, III, IV). Quadrants go in the same order you would write a “c” for coordinate plane II I III IV

10 Points and Ordered Pairs
Every point on our graph shows an exact location in space. Use CAPITAL letters to label points on the graph (A, B, C,…). The exact location of a point is shown by its “coordinates” (a.k.a. ordered pair). Ordered pairs are in the form (x, y). They indicate the position of a point on the Cartesian Plane.

13 If x-coordinate is 0, don’t move left or right. The point will be on the y-axis. If y-coordinate is 0, don’t move up or down. The point will be on the x-axis.

Give the coordinates of each point. S (–3, 3)

Give the coordinates of each point. X (4, –1)
