1 How to multiply and divide integers
By Cathy Ruth

2 Multiplying integers To multiply integers you must first know that if you multiply a positive by a negative it will stay negative but if you multiply ether a positive by positive or negative by negative it will be positive. To give a basic example of these concepts here are some integer problems: * 3= * 3 = * -5 = 40 Other than this concept it’s just the same as regular multiplication. To compare here are some examples: -8 * -5 is the same as 5 * 8 -2 * 3 is just 2 * 3 with a negative sign on the answer. Here are some practice problems: * * * 8 Answers will be on answer slide.

3 Dividing Integers Dividing integers is the practically the same as dividing. Using the concept as before here are some examples: -25 / 5 = -5 49 / 7 = 7 If you understand this try the problems at the bottom of the slide, if not just continue reading. To make it simpler to understand think regular division. Now add in the concept of + + = + and - - = + as well as - + = - So it’s pretty much division with – and + Now check your understanding / 6 / -4 3. 18 / 3 Key: / is the division sign
