Nadira and family are illegal aliens who moved to the US from Bangladesh. They have been living on expired visas. After 9/11, being a muslim becomes dangerous. They become suspected terrorists. They flee to Canada but Nadira’s father gets arrested and detained at the border. The two young sisters have to go back and try to carry on with their lives. They live in fear that the family will get deported back to Bangladesh. The two sisters have to work together to try and get their family back together. I believe the theme of this book is cultural differences.

3. Characters Nadira- Main character, self conscious
Aisha- sister, intelligent, influential
Abba- Father, smart, sent to detention center
Ma- root of the family, quiet
Nadira is the main character and is the youngest in her immediate family. She is described as a chubby teenager. She is self conscious, but wants to succeed in life. She is always getting compared to her older sister, Aisha. Aisha is Nadira’s sister. She is intelligent and very influential towards everyone. She can convince anyone to side with her. When a problem arises, usually Aisha is the one to have the answers. Abba is Aisha and Nadira’s father. He is smart and wants the girls to succeed in life. He is a good guy and wants the best for his family. The mother is the root of family. She is quiet and does not say much. Overall,l their family seems pretty close, and they to help one another.

4. Writer’s Style Imagery: Similes:
“Our legs are loose kneed and weak. The streets are soaked in a frosty white light.”
“When the gavel cracks, wood on wood, the air seems to explode with light.”

5. Recommendation Recommend Descriptive History
I really enjoyed this book even though it was little slow and confusing in the beginning. It gives good detail about how the family's life changed because of 9/11. The novel also gives a little bit of history about how immigrants life have changed since the 9/11 incident. It is a compelling story about how two young girls struggled to keep their family together. You learn a lot about what immigrants had to go through.
