2 Volcanoes Volcanoes are opening’s in the Earth’s surface through which melted rock, hot gases, rock fragments, and ash erupt. Volcanoes are so hot beneath the surface that rock melts. This melted rock is called MAGMA.

3 Volcanoes The magma mixes with hot gases and travel to the earth’s surface. Once there is enough pressure from the hot gases, the magma erupts from the Volcano. Once magma reaches the surface, it is called LAVA.

4 Volcanoes Various materials erupt from volcanoes:
Magma or Lava at the surface Gases, mostly steam but sometimes poisonous gases Rock fragments Ash, dust, large chunks are known as bombs. Small bombs are called cinders

5 3 types of volcanoes Shield Volcanoes
Lava flows smoothly from a vent and covers a wide area Creates a broad, low dome shaped volcano

6 Examples of Shield Volcanoes

7 3 types of volcanoes Cinder cone volcano
Form mostly from rock fragments erupting and accumulate around the vent. Cone shaped with very steep sides

8 Cinder Cone Examples

9 3 types of Volcanoes Composite volcanoes
Cone shaped with steep sides, just not as steep as the cinder

10 Composite volcano examples
