1 The Greenhouse Effect

2

3 Examples of greenhouse gases

4 Minute Earth – How do greenhouse gases actually work?

5 Where does carbon come from?
Carbon can be found in both organic and inorganic things. All living things contain carbon. When organisms die, the carbon they contain can either be recycled by decomposers, or trapped in the earths crust

6 What are sources of CO2 emission?
Cellular Respiration – living things releases CO2 Burning fossil fuels – gasoline, coal and oil release CO2 Deforestation – clear cutting of forestry reduces the number or green plants that can absorb CO2. Burning trees also releases CO2 into the atmosphere. Recall: combustion reaction Hydrocarbons + O2  CO2 + H2O

7 Cellular Respiration

8 Burning fossil fuels – gasoline, coal and oil release CO2

9 Deforestation

10 What are sources of CH4 emissions?
Livestock – cows belching. Landfills – the decay of garbage releases CH4 over time. Natural gas CH4 traps 20 times more heat than CO2.
