1 Learning Through Storytelling Cydney Harper-Ingram EDU697 Capstone: A Project Approach Dr. Margaret Broderick

2 Overview of Lesson According to the textbook, in storytelling activities, learners tell stories relevant to the subject they are studying. (Pg. 184) Objectives: Students will be able to: Contribute text stories Tell stories from their own experiences Present stories and discuss them Publish stories as blog entries

3 Grade Level: 6th Course: English
Storytelling Grade Level: 6th Course: English

4 Resource/Materials Students will tell a story consisting of a setting, characters, conflict, resolution and a moral. Activities/Procedures Students will come up with a story based on a life experience and make the story come to life. Students will then choose characters to act out their story. Upon choosing characters, students will then act out the story the storyteller is telling.

5 Storytelling After each storyteller has finished, I will divide the students into small groups to talk about what they have learned. After 15 minutes of discussion, I will ask each student to tell the class what story inspired them the most and what they have learned about storytelling. Once the class discussion phase is over, we will then discuss different types of storytelling activities.

6 Wrap Up Once this assignment is finished, students will research storytelling and write a 1 page paper about their storytelling experience and what they have learned through this experience. ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION By allowing students to tell stories based on personal experiences, this will show leadership skills and allow students to reflect an evaluate on great experiences.

7 Learning Through Storytelling
Through this assignment I have learned telling stories expresses leadership. Storytelling expresses character. Storytelling allows students to communicate thoughts and feelings.

9 Assessment of Storytelling
Essential questions: Name the five parts of a story Name two things storytelling builds What have you learned about storytelling What are some different type of storytelling activities

10 Through teaching this assignment I know I may experience some hardships but, I do not think this will be a hard assignment to teach. I believe storytelling will bring out the best in my students and me also. I believe these stories will help us bond and all come closer together.
