1
Speed vs. Velocity
2
Speed Common measurement used to describe the motion of objects.
Definition: the distance an object travels divided by the time it takes.
3
Velocity Speed with direction North, South, East, West
Up, down, left, right Example: the car was traveling 60 mph North It has speed and direction! V = d/t
4
You decide Speed or Velocity?
The pilot flew the airplane 500 mph, southeast Tammy rode her bicycle 15 m/s A car traveled 45 km/hr, west. The van went past the pedestrian at 70 mph
5
Velocity =Distance ÷ Time
Calculating Velocity Velocity =Distance ÷ Time Lauren swam 50 meters in 10 seconds. What was her speed? What information do we have. Lets plug it in? Speed = Velocity without direction (which we don’t know, so it becomes our variable “V”) Distance = 50 meters Time = 10 seconds V = 50 m. ÷10 sec. V=5 meters/second
