: Fought for South African civil rights Led non-violent protests, marches, boycotts Salt March: In 1930 he led a 250 mile protest March against salt taxes to the sea Murdered in 1948 by Hindu radical upset with his acceptance of Muslims

3 World War II India entered war with Germany by default in 1939
Indian National Congress (INC) did not support fascism nor colonialism “Quit India” Movement: Called by Gandhi in attempt to make one final push towards independence Almost all INC members imprisoned because of suspected rebellion

4 Independence Achieved independence on August 15, 1947
India Act of 1935: Divided up India into provinces Jawaharlul Nehru, from the INC,was chosen as first Prime Minister of the Republic of India

5 Partition Muslim League: Founded in 1906 and its main goal was to establish a separate, Muslim state Upon creation of Pakistan in 1947, million people uprooted from India to cross the border About 1 million people died upon the trek Indo-Pakistani War: Series of four wars beginning in 1947 East Pakistan becomes Bangladesh in 1971
