2. INTRODUCTION
The Iditarod started because kids needed medicine because they were sick and not doing so well. People gave medicine to people who are sick with Diphtheria. The race started because kids and people were sick.

4. DOGS The dogs wear booties The dogs use harnesses
They used Siberian huskies and Alaskan malamutes.

5. ROUTES AND CHECKPOINTS
The routes are different because there was not a lot of snow on the original trail
They usually start at Anchorage but this year they started in Fairbanks.
They end at Nome
There are approximately 1049 miles.
There are 17 checkpoints this year.

6. AWARDS
Wells Fargo Red Lantern is given to the last musher to finish the race.
Anchorage Chrysler Dodge Official Truck Award is for the winner this year
Golden Clipboard Award presented by race officials to the most outstanding checkpoint.
