Instructions: As your teacher shows you the following slides, decide if the picture represents “Work” – when a force applied to an object causes motion of the object in the same direction as the force. OR “No Work” no motion motion of the object in not in the same direction as the direction of the force. Show your answer on your white board or with your total response card

3 Is work done on basketball?

4 Answer: Yes, work is done on the basketball, because it moves in the direction of the force throwing it.

5 Is work done on the ball if the person pushes, but the ball doesn’t move?

6 Answer: No work , the person is not doing work because their force is not moving the ball over a distance.

7 Objects are equal weight. Is work being done on the balance?

8 No work is done because forces are balanced and no motion occurs.

9 The car crashed into the tree, but the tree did not move
The car crashed into the tree, but the tree did not move. Was work done on the tree?

10 Answer: No work is done because forces are balanced and the tree doesn’t move.

11 The rocket moves up as the exhaust pushes down
The rocket moves up as the exhaust pushes down. Is work done on the rocket?

12 Answer: No work is done because the forces move opposite: exhaust is pushing down as the rocket is pushing up.

13 Is the student doing work when staying up late to study?

14 Answer: No work, even though the student is tired, no force moved anything over a distance, so no work was done.
