1 WHY DO CELLS NEED TO REPRODUCE?
Bell Work Take out notebooks. Answer the question: WHY DO CELLS NEED TO REPRODUCE?

2 Learning Goals Identify the purpose of cellular mitosis.
Illustrate each stage of mitosis after observing images of real cells. Compare/contrast mitosis in animal and plant cells and create questions about mitosis to be answered through research.

3 Three reasons why cells reproduce by asexual reproduction: 1. Growth 2
**Three reasons why cells reproduce by asexual reproduction: Growth Repair Replacement

4 Animal Cell Mitosis Animation
How do cells reproduce? Cell Division Animal Cell Mitosis Animation

5 Review: The Cell ANIMAL CELL PLANT CELL

6 Review: What Cells Do Cells are the basic units of all living things.
Cells make up bones, muscles, skin, and blood. Cells make up leaves, roots, stems, and flowers. As the organism grows, the cells must reproduce. Cell reproduction is called mitosis.

7 Animal Cell Reproduction (Mitosis)
Plant Cell Reproduction (Mitosis)

8 RESEARCHERS Split up into groups of 2 and draw the stages of mitosis of plant or animal cell. Write what you think is happening in each stage under the picture. Answer questions #1-3.

9 Animal Cell Reproduction (Mitosis)
Plant Cell Reproduction (Mitosis)

10 RESEARCHERS Meet with another group (who did the opposite cell).
Answer question #4 and #5 together.

11 Closure What’s happening during cell division? Plant vs. Animal Cell
Why do cells divide?

12 Homework Label your pictures with the correct name of each phase of Mitosis. Write the name and description about what happens in each phase.
