2. What is Purpose?
When Reading, ask yourself, “Why did the author create this?”
Is the author trying to teach me something?
Does the author want me to agree with them?
When Writing, you need to figure out what the goal of your writing is
Am I trying to convince my reader of something?
Am I trying to inform the audience about a topic?

3. To Inform:
Presents information that may or may not be unfamiliar to the audience
Depending on who they are, the audience may require more or less information
This purpose should be free of BIAS or opinions
These take the form of research papers, essays, narratives, and news articles

4. To Persuade:
Attempts to convince the audience to agree with the speaker or their goals
Does this by presenting information like an informative piece, but also provides an opinion to justify
Depending on bias, audiences may be more focused than other writing
Examples include: Editorials, Opinion Columns, Personal Writing/Books

5. To Express:
This is the most personal form of writing. The author is writing for themselves
Expresses ideas, thoughts, and emotions that are focused on the author as the sole audience
Usually not intended to be read by others
Examples include: diary entries, personal journaling, reflective writing

6. To Be Poetic:
In this purpose, the author was writing to convey a message AND to experiment with style
Focuses just as much on what is being said as the WAY it is being said
Examples include: Freewriting, poetry (spoken and written), experimental novels

7. To Entertain: Most common form of commercial writing
Does not imply comedy or positive emotions
Many works written to entertain are serious or sad; difficult topics can be entertaining as well
If a piece of writing does not fall into another category, it is likely in this one

8. New Word: Metalinguistic
This writing is designed to help look at writing on a deeper level
Reviews, analysis, and reflective writing all fall into this category
Teachers writing about your writing also fall into this purpose

9. Your Task!
Identify the Purpose/s of the following. Write a brief statement whether or not you feel the work is appropriate for those purposes:
A research paper about the causes of WWII. The writer attempts to present the beginning of the war in first person from the perspective of world leaders.
An advertisement campaign about the dangers of smoking. The campaign features images of gruesome scars created by surgeries necessitated by cancer.
A public art fixture of harmful words engraved on statues representing foreign children. The statues are placed in front of a city government building without permission.
