8 Mean while the Germans had gone against their alliance with the USSR and had invaded them
After the Battle of Stalingrad the Germans were retreating back to Germany 1,100,000 Soviets lost their lives defending the city. More that the US would lose in the entire war!!

13 Next the Allies Invaded Italy this gave Germany a 2 front war
Mussolini is taken from power by the Italian people and hung in the street It took several years more to push the Germans back to Germany

15 D Day The next move was to invade the German occupied France
on June 6,1944 the Allies crossed the English Channel and invaded on the Coast of Normandy (a part of France) *****Despite heavy loses the allied held their ground and by Sept had liberated France, Luxemburg, and Belgium from German Control

22 The Battle of Midway There were several naval battles in the Pacific.
Here the Japanese tried to trap the US by invading Midway hoping the US would follow and be defeated The US intercepted communications by the Japanese and meet the Japanese there

26 After the Battle of Midway Japan (lacking natural resources) never recovered
The US quickly built new ships that were faster and stronger

27 After VE Day US concentrated on Japan
Island hopping- taking over one island at a time- was how the US moved through the Pacific in the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa
