Physical/Chemical Properties and Changes

Physical Property: is a characteristic of matter that can be observed without changing what the object is

What are Physical Changes?
Physical changes are concerned with energy and states of matter. This change does not produce a new substance it just simply changes the way it looks.

1) Physical changes might change the substances size, shape or state of matter (freezes, condenses, evaporates etc) but not the substance itself.

2) During a physical change the material itself is the same before and after the change.

3) Physical changes CAN be “undone” sometimes
3) Physical changes CAN be “undone” sometimes. If you melt an ice cube you can always put it back in the freezer and re-freeze it

If you have a bad haircut, your hair is still chemically the same but it can’t be “undone”

Chemical Property: may only be observed by changing the chemical identity of a substance

What are Chemical Changes?
Chemical Changes produce a new substance. It is a reaction occurring and a new component is formed.

1) During a chemical change the substances present at the beginning of the change are not present at the end; new substances are formed.

2) Things like digestion, burning, decomposition and ripening (think fruit) cause chemical changes

3) Chemical changes CANNOT always be undone.
