Complete your RAFT writing assignment in Google Classroom by Friday. Keep in mind all aspects of RAFT. Your writing should appropriately reflect the role, format, audience, and topic, as well as convey your historical knowledge. 4 Rise of Joseph Stalin Take out a copy of today’s reading from the folder at your table. On the side with the reading, label your paragraphs 1 to 5. After we read each paragraph, underline the information in the text that explains Stalin’s leadership qualities. As we read, highlight and define unknown vocabulary words. Summarize: Predict what kind of leader you think Stalin will become for Russia.

What connections do you see in the timeline of Joseph Stalin’s Early Life? Stalin is named the General Secretary of the Communist Party. Stalin is arrested for organizing strikes against an oil refinery. Joseph Stalin, is born in the village of Gori in Georgia. Stalin gets married. Lenin appoints Stalin Commissar of Nationalities. 6 Who was Joseph Stalin? Joseph Stalin was a Russian dictator in the 20th century. He was responsible for leading the Soviet Union through World War II and into the Cold War with the United States. He was also responsible for the deaths of millions of Russians through purges and decisions that led to mass starvation.

7 Stalin’s Early Life He was born in Georgia. The area was characterized by gang wars and street brawls. He organized bank robberies, arms deals, and assassination attempts and put in prison in He was again arrested in 1911 and exiled. He created Pravda in It was a Bolshevik newspaper. He was caught and again exiled. Are these leadership qualities you want for your country's leader?

8 ¯During the Russian Civil War, Stalin was put in the Politburo (the executive committee for the Communist Party). He opposed many of Leon Trotsky’s policies (Trotsky was a Bolshevik Revolutionary and Marxist Theorist). ¯He was sent to Tsaristyn where he ordered the killings of former tsarist military leaders and counter-revolutionaries and burned villages to intimidate peasants. ¯In 1919, to stem mass desertions on the Western front, he had deserters and renegades publicly executed executed.
