3 Fast Facts: The Peter Zenger Trial
Who was involved: German Immigrant, Peter Zenger, printed for a publication called THE NEW YORK WEEKLY JOURNAL. What happened: The JOURNAL printed actions about the corrupt governor of New York, William S. Crosby. Zenger was accused of LIBEL and was tried in court. Where: New York When: 1733 Why was there a trial? Zenger was accused of printing, not writing, the information about the governor: rigging elections, allowing the French to explore New York harbor, and labeling him an idiot. Thus, showing opposition to the government at the time. How did the court rule? Zenger never denied printing the information... Guilty or Innocent??? **Participate in the gallery walk to find out the VERDICT*** Please note: Libel at this time meant— when you published information that opposed a government. It did not matter if the information was true or false.
