2. Dont
Dont (meaning of which or whom) is used when you wind up saying something involving a « de » at the end of the sentence. Remember, « de » means of or from.
This is the general concept:
Here is the pen I dream(rêver) of.
Let’s translate literally: « voici le stylo je rêve de. »
THE DE CANNOT COME LAST, replace it with a dont. « voici le stylo je rêve dont. » Translation: « Here is the pen I dream of which. »
Now, let’s rearrange it. « Here is the pen of which I dream. »
en français: « voici le stylo dont je rêve .»

3. So, to simplify:
It is the same general concept as lequel and goes in the same place.

4. Example 2: Here is the car I think of. Voici la voiture je pense de
Voici la voiture je pense dont. (here is the car I think of which)
Make it make sense.
Voici la voiture dont je pense. (here is the car of which I think.

5. Let’s Try: Here is the pen I am thinking of.
I like the car that you dream of.
We are looking at the house that you dream of.

6. To make this more complicated
Some expressions end in « de » in French that do NOT end in « of » in English. You just need to know them:
Se souvenir de- to remember
Faire semblance de- To pretend
S’occuper de- To take care of
Avoir envie de- to want
Parler de – to talk about
avoir besoin de – to need
Défenser de – to forbid

7. Let’s try this one: That’s the car I remember!
Translate literally: Voici la voiture je me souviens de.
change it - Voici la voiture je me souviens dont.
(here is the car I remember of which).
voici la voiture dont je me souviens.
(Here is the car that I remember).

8. One more: Here is the book I need!
Translate: Voici le livre J’ai besoin de (here is the book I have need of).
Change to dont - Voici le livre j’ai besoin dont (Here is the book I have need of which)
rearrange to make sense
voici le livre dont j’ai besoin (here’s the book of which I have need).

9. Try these: We buy the book that you need.
You throw the cd that I want!
