Why do cells have different shapes?
Chapter 2.6 Why do cells have different shapes?

CELL SIZE Unicellular organism- is an organism that has only 1 cell. An example of an unicellular organism is amoeba. Multicellular organism- is an organism that has many cells. Examples of an multicellular organism are elodea (water plant in a fish tank), frog, elephant, human being, frog, fish, sunflower, etc.

Different cells Different cells
Different kinds of cells have different jobs. The shapes of most cells help them to do their jobs. Different cells Amoeba cell Red blood cell Nerve cells Guard cells

Amoeba AMOEBA- is an unicellular organism that lives in water. They can change their own shape. They have a fingerlike extensions called pseudopods (“false foot”) that help amoeba to move.

Red Blood cells RED BLOOD CELLS- are in blood. They are round, red, and have no nucleus. The job of red blood cells is to carry oxygen O2 and carbon dioxide CO2.

Nerve cells NERVE CELLS: nerve cells look different than amoeba or blood cells. The nerve cells store information in the brain. Other nerve cells carry information from cell to another. They have long “arms” to carry information.

Guard cells GUARD CELLS- two bean-shaped cells called guard cells are a tiny opening on the surface of a plant leaf. This opening is called a stoma. They let oxygen O2 and carbon dioxide CO2 to enter and leave. The guard cells control the size of stoma.

Guard cells

What is the difference between unicellular organism and multicellular organism? Give examples of each.

How do red blood cells look like?

How is the size and shape of a nerve cell related to its function?

How do amoeba move?

Fill in blanks: 1.Organism with one cells are __________________________. 2. Amoebas use _________________________ to capture (get) food. 3. The job of a _____________ is to carry oxygen and carbon dioxide. 4. A _______________________ is a tiny opening on the underside of a plant leaf. 5. The _____________ control the size of the stoma.
