1 Welcome to Science

2 Homework: “Write it, Do it” Reflection
How is the “Write it, Do it” activity doing science? In a paragraph, list 3 (or more) things that you learned from this activity?

3 Question: What makes someone a scientist?
Warm-up Question: What makes someone a scientist? Brainstorm in your group for 2-4 minutes.

4 Hello, my name is__________.
MS. MOLINA  7th grade

5 Class expectations     1.      Be prepared for class: Always come to science prepared for learning outside. Bring a water bottle, appropriate shoes, a clipboard, a notebook or loose leaf paper, and a pencil(s) to science every day. It's also a good idea to have sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. (If you do not have a certain supply, please ask a peer or Ms. Molina BEFORE we leave for the field.) 2.      Homework:  No homework assignments will be accepted late.  This is because the homework is to prepare you for the lesson for that day.  Most homework assignments should not take you more than 30 minutes to an hour. 3.      Absent: If you miss school due to an excused absence, you will have one extra day for each day missed to make up your work. You are responsible for checking Weebly for missed assignments. 4.      Be GREEN!:  If possible, use scratch paper, cut half sheets of paper to use for later, only use what you need… 5.      Be Respectful: Please respect your classmates and teacher when they are speaking.  Also have an open-mind to other people’s opinions and beliefs. 6.      Be Responsible:  You are not responsible for other student's words, behaviors, and attitudes.  Let others own their words, behaviors, and attitude.  They do not reflect on you, only you reflect on you. 7.      *IMPORTANT* Be SAFE:  Most of the time we will be out of the classroom and learning around Maui.  It is extremely important that you are aware of your surroundings, staying within the boundaries, and following directions.  We need to be safe at all times to avoid harming ourselves, others, and the environment.  NO HORSEPLAY!  Not being safe in the field could result in suspension from field activities. 8.      Extra Help: I am always available for extra help at school and will respond to promptly. 9.      Have fun!:  We will be doing a lot of hands-on activities and experiments.  Be ready to have fun and dive into science!

6 Logowear You will receive a Logowear grade in science for wearing your KCS logowear to school everyday.

7 Nature of Science Trial and error New information =new theories May not have complete information Sometimes, we get lucky and find the right answer Collaboration may be helpful Once we arrive at the answer, it makes sense.

8 What is a scientist?

9 You are a scientist!

10 Observations vs. Inferences
●An observation is a statement describing a fact. ● Use five senses: smell, taste, sight, touch, and sound. ● Simply describe something as it appears. Example: There are clouds in the sky and puddles of water on the ground

11 Observations vs. Inferences
Example: It has recently rained. Note: You didn’t see it rain, but came to that conclusion from your observation. Inference: ● An inference is a conclusion based on your understanding of the facts. ● It requires thought.

12 Observation vs. Inference

13 Quantitative vs. Qualitative
Example: Johnny is 5 feet 5 inches. Quantitative: ● Observations described in terms of measurement ● example: inches, ounces, grams, celcius.

14 Quantitative vs. Qualitative
Example: Johnny is almost as tall as his older brother Bobby! Qualitative: ● Observations described only with your senses. ● example: It feels… It’s smells…

15 Warm-up Write down 2 observations,2 inferences, 2 quantitative, 2 qualitative of the object Ms. Molina will show you.
