1 The Nervous System What is it?

2 What is the nervous system?
The Nervous System is the master controlling and communicating system of the body. The Nervous system CONTROLS and COORDINATES ALL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS of the human body!!!

3 The Nervous System is broken down to two major systems
Central Nervous System Consists of the brain & the spinal cord. They work together to interpret incoming sensory information & issue instructions based on past experiences & current conditions Peripheral Nervous System Part of the nervous system outside of the CNS. Link all parts of the body by carrying impulses from the sensory receptors to the CNS & from CNS to the muscle or gland. Consists mainly of nerves that extend from the brain and spinal cord.

6 Parts of the Central Nervous System
The BRAIN!! Cerebral hemispheres – Left and right sides of your brain.**Right side controls muscle function on left side of body and left side of brain controls muscle function on right side of body** Diencephalon – Relays sensory information between brain regions & controls many autonomic (involuntary) functions of the peripheral nervous system. Brain stem – Connects to the spinal cord and allows messages to come in out of the brain to the spinal cord, consists of the medulla (extension of spinal cord), the pons, and the midbrain. Cerebellum - Controls posture and movements of parts of the body including eyes, heads, and limbs.
