1 Homecrest Presbyterian Church Worship of the Lord’s Day March 18th, 2018 5th Sunday in Lent

2 Gathering Around the WORD Call to Worship (I King 17:8-16)
In times of security and times of uncertainty, O Lord, you hear our prayers. Confident in your faithfulness, We will ever praise your name. Through the abundance of your steadfast love you have gathered us into your house. In the holiness of your presence, we bow down to worship and adore you.

3 Gathering Around the WORD Gathering Hymn # 213 “In the Cross of Christ I Glory”
In the cross of Christ I glory, towering o’er the wrecks of time; all the light of sacred story gathers round its head sublime.

4 Gathering Around the WORD Gathering Hymn # 213 “In the Cross of Christ I Glory”
When the woes of life o’er-take me, hopes deceive, and fears annoy, never shall the cross forsake me; lo, it glows with peace and joy.

5 Gathering Around the WORD Gathering Hymn # 213 “In the Cross of Christ I Glory”
When the sun of bliss is beaming light and love upon my way, from the cross the radiance streaming adds more luster to the day.

6 Gathering Around the WORD Gathering Hymn # 213 “In the Cross of Christ I Glory”
Bane and blessing, pain and pleasure, by the cross are sanctified; peace is there that knows no measure, joys that through all time abide.

7 Gathering Around the WORD Call to Confession Our God is a God of mercy and grace. God delights in us when we cry out to him, through our confession and our prayers. As we approach God’s throne in worship, let us renew our commitment to live honorably and faithfully in God’s grace.

8 Gathering Around the WORD Prayer of Confession (Psalm 51:1-12) (To Be Read Responsively)
1   Have mercy on me, O God,           according to your steadfast love;      according to your abundant mercy           blot out my transgressions. 2   Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity,           and cleanse me from my sin.

9 Gathering Around the WORD Prayer of Confession (Psalm 51:1-12) (To Be Read Responsively)
3   For I know my transgressions,           and my sin is ever before me. 4   Against you, you alone, have I sinned,           and done what is evil in your sight,      so that you are justified in your sentence           and blameless when you pass judgment.

10 Gathering Around the WORD Prayer of Confession (Psalm 51:1-12) (To Be Read Responsively)
5   Indeed, I was born guilty,           a sinner when my mother conceived me. 6   You desire truth in the inward being;           therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart. 7   Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;           wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8   Let me hear joy and gladness;           let the bones that you have crushed rejoice.

11 Gathering Around the WORD Prayer of Confession (Psalm 51:1-12) (To Be Read Responsively)
9   Hide your face from my sins,           and blot out all my iniquities. 10  Create in me a clean heart, O God,           and put a new and right spirit within me. 11  Do not cast me away from your presence,           and do not take your holy spirit from me. 12  Restore to me the joy of your salvation,           and sustain in me a willing spirit.

12 Gathering Around the WORD Declaration of Forgiveness
Hear the good news! By faith we have been saved, our guilty hearts washed clean. Refreshed, revived, and renewed, empowered by the Holy Spirit, we live as ones who are forgiven and freed. Thanks be to God.

13 Gathering Around the WORD Gloria Patri
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

14 Gathering Around the WORD Passing of the Peace of Christ
(Matthew 5:9) Jesus said, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” Children of God, let us share the peace of Christ and the love of God through our actions and in truth. May the Peace of our Lord be with you, and also with you.

15 Proclaiming the WORD Message to the Youth/ Prayer of Illumination

16 Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading (Jeremiah 31:31-34)
31The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 32It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt — a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the LORD. 33But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

17 Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading (Jeremiah 31:31-34)
34No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, “Know the LORD,” for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more.

18 Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading (John 12:20-33)
20Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. 21They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. 23Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.

19 Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading (John 12:20-33)
25Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor.

20 Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading (John 12:20-33)
27“Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say — ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. 28Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” 29The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” 30Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not for mine.

21 Proclaiming the WORD Scripture Reading (John 12:20-33)
31Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. 32And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” 33He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die.

22 Proclaiming the WORD (Jeremiah 31:31-34 and John 12:20-33)
Troubling Soul

23 Responding Hymn # 724 “O Jesus, I Have Promised”
O Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end; be thou forever near me, my Master and my friend; I shall not fear the battle if thou art by my side, nor wander from the pathway if thou wilt be my guide.

24 Responding Hymn # 724 “O Jesus, I Have Promised”
O let me feel thee near me! The world is ever near: I see the sights that dazzle; the tempting sounds I hear. My foes are ever near me, around me and within; but, Jesus, draw thou nearer and shield my soul from sin.

25 Responding Hymn # 724 “O Jesus, I Have Promised”
O let me hear thee speaking in accents clear and still, above the storms of passion, the murmurs of self-will; O speak to reassure me, to hasten or control; O speak, and make me listen, thou guardian of my soul.

26 Responding Hymn # 724 “O Jesus, I Have Promised”
O Jesus, thou hast promised to all who follow thee that where thou art in glory there shall thy servant be. And, Jesus, I have promised to serve thee to the end; O give me grace to follow, my Master and my friend.

32 Bearing and Following the WORD into the World Doxology and Offertory Prayer

33 Sending Hymn #432 “How Clear Is Our Vocation, Lord”
How clear is our vocation, Lord, when once we heed your call to live according to your word and daily learn, refreshed, restored, that you are Lord of all and will not let us fall.

34 Sending Hymn #432 “How Clear Is Our Vocation, Lord”
But if, forgetful, we should find your yoke is hard to bear; if worldly pressures fray the mind and love itself cannot unwind its tangled skein of care: our inward life repair.

35 Sending Hymn #432 “How Clear Is Our Vocation, Lord”
We marvel how your saints became in hindrances more sure: whose joyful virtues put to shame the casual way we wear your name, and by our faults obscure your power to cleanse and cure.

36 Sending Hymn #432 “How Clear Is Our Vocation, Lord”
In what you give us, Lord, to do, together or alone, in old routines or ventures new, may we not cease to look to you: the cross you hung upon, all you endeavored, done.
